Geriatric nursing is a fast growing career that involves caring for the elderly. This type of nursing is entirely focused on developing and implementing treatment plans for respiratory disorders, hypertension, diabetes and other chronic illnesses. It's the geriatric nurse's responsibility to educate, support and counsel families of old patients who suffer from chronic and acute diseases. Geriatric nurses can find work in clinical practice as well as in education, consulting, administration and research. Geriatric nurses work in various environments including: hospitals, assisted living facilities, nursing homes and community health centers where they offer compassion, care and emotional support. If the patient requires regular medical assistance at home, the geriatric nurse delivers in-home care as well. Geriatric nurses are trained to understand and treat the complex mental and physical needs of the elderly.

This field is expected to expand significantly over the next years.There are three types of certification for geriatric nurses: Gerontological Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist in Gerontological Nursing and Gerontological Nurse Specialist. The average income of a geriatric nurse can vary greatly based on experience, certifications and nursing degree level. Geriatric nurses normally make somewehere in the $65,000 - $68,913 range per year, but if you have more than 10 years of experience you can expect to make above $75,000.
