Nursing and Age Discrimination

Most people have a pretty stereotypical view of nurses. We tend to picture nurses as young women even though there are older women and even men in this field as well. The question is, will employers discriminate on age or is this just a myth? And is there such thing as age discrimination in nursing schools?

It's true that discrimination used to be a issue back when the country wasn't facing a nursing shortage. With the increasing demand of skilled nurses, nursing schools are expected to welcome every motivated candidate. Students that usually feel like they don't fit the typical profile include: older students, students with disabilities, male nursing students and minority nursing students. Unfortunately, age discrimination still exists even if at a more subtle level. What everyone needs to understand is that age can bring a large number of advantages to this occupation including adaptability, good critical thinking skills and experience.

This is available for older students as well as for people in the midst of a career change who are looking to continue their education and advance their nursing skills. If you've decided to become a nurse, make sure you follow your dream regardless of any type of discrimination.
