Parish Nursing

Parish Nursing specializes in integrating the practice of nursing within the context of the practices, beliefs and values of a religious community. The goal of a parish nurse is to encourage spiritual and physical wholeness and health by developing programs within faith communities. People of faith can use parish nursing as a way to integrate spirit, community, body and mind into their nursing practice.

You have to be a registered nurse and a person of faith in order to become a parish nurse. Parish nurses are required not only to deal with sickness but also to focus on health promotion, disease prevention and wellness. Some of the responsibilities you are given as a parish nurse may include: health education, health counseling, coordinating and trading volunteers, responding to such issues as violence, addictions and substance abuse within community members. As a parish nurse you can choose to work either with one large congregation or with multiple smaller ones.

This specialty is relatively new but it has recently grown in prominence after having been recognized by the American Nurses Association. Health related social issues including violence, mental illness and addiction can now be treated by trained medical professionals within the community.
